Were Marie Antoinette’s last words an apology to her executioner?
VERDICTTRUE
As far as anyone recorded. On 16 October 1793 she stepped on the executioner’s foot on the scaffold and said, “Pardon, monsieur, I did not do it on purpose.” Antonia Fraser’s standard biography accepts these as her last words. Part of the trail runs through the Sanson family’s later and rather decorated memoirs, so the exact wording is tradition; the manners are not in dispute.
