Did Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette really take seven years to consummate their marriage?
VERDICTTRUE
Yes. They married on 16 May 1770 and produced no heir. In 1777 her brother, Emperor Joseph II, came to Versailles and wrote home a frank, anatomical account of the problem. Within months the marriage was consummated, and their first child, Marie-Thérèse, arrived in December 1778. The King’s journal records the birth with his usual restraint.
