On New Year’s Day 1772, under orders from her mother, she passed the King’s mistress and said: “Il y a bien du monde aujourd’hui à Versailles” (There are a lot of people at Versailles today). Ambassador Mercy reported it to Maria Theresa, along with the Dauphine’s own verdict: she had spoken once, and “this woman will never hear the sound of my voice again.”
