Did Marie Antoinette order the diamond necklace?

No. She had already refused the 1.6-million-livre necklace. The self-styled Countess de La Motte convinced Cardinal de Rohan the Queen secretly wanted it, staged a night meeting in the Queen’s Grove on 11 August 1784 with a stand-in Queen, and took the diamonds. In 1786 Rohan was acquitted and La Motte branded. The Queen, who had done nothing, was blamed anyway.
