Are Maine Coon cats descended from Marie Antoinette’s cats?
VERDICTRUMOR
Only in Maine folklore. The story says Captain Samuel Clough of Wiscasset plotted to carry the Queen to America and sailed home with her belongings and six of her cats when the plan failed. The Cat Fanciers’ Association tells it as legend and prefers the duller account: longhaired cats brought in by sailors bred with local shorthairs, and New England winters did the rest.
