Did Catherine Howard say “I die a queen, but I would rather die the wife of Culpeper”?
VERDICTRUMOR
The line comes from the anonymous Spanish Chronicle, a source so careless that it makes Catherine Howard the fourth wife and has Culpeper die after her. Ambassadors Chapuys and Marillac reported that neither she nor Lady Rochford said much on the scaffold, and a merchant’s letter of 15 February 1542 describes a pious, repentant end.
