Did Franklin really wear a fur cap in Paris?

Yes, and he knew how it looked. Writing from Paris on February 8, 1777, he described himself to Emma Thompson as very plainly dressed, his thin grey hair under “a fine Fur Cap, which comes down my Forehead almost to my Spectacles. Think how this must appear among the Powder’d Heads of Paris.”
