Did Benjamin Franklin want the turkey to be the national bird?

He never proposed it. In a private letter to his daughter Sarah Bache on January 26, 1784, provoked by the eagle on the Society of the Cincinnati medal, he called the bald eagle “a Bird of bad moral Character” and the turkey “a much more respectable Bird.” He made no public campaign and no proposal to Congress.
