The Library › Reel II · The Queen Bee

Did Cleopatra speak many languages?

Plutarch says her tongue was ‘like an instrument of many strings,’ and that she rarely needed an interpreter, answering Ethiopians, Troglodytes, Hebrews, Arabians, Syrians, Medes and Parthians herself. He adds that the Ptolemaic kings before her had not even bothered to learn Egyptian, the language of the country they ruled for nearly three centuries.
